Told any good stories lately?

Legend has it that Ernest Hemmingway, master of the short story, said the following was his best work: “For sale: Baby shoes, never worn.” So few words, yet so much to whet the imagination! How short can a short story be and still speak volumes?  Apparently, six words.

Sometimes we can feel cheated by a short story. Just as we began to fall in love with the characters, the story can take a turn and a quick, although not unnecessary, end. In many ways a short story has an even bigger task to accomplish than a novel. It must deliver a concise beginning, middle and conclusion in a short piece of work. It is never about the length of the story, but the passion, voice, tempo and flow of the character’s words, and the author’s style that keeps us hooked.

As an online magazine with a strong literary bent--we intend to greatly expand our “literary” sections--VisibleWomanOnline will continue its inclusion of short stories. We will be including stories from women (and men), those who have been secret writers, and the other more pubic writers who are excited about the opportunity to have found a supportive medium for their work.

Perhaps you have some magic running through your mind that needs to be released on paper and sent on its way. Whatever you choose to do with that magic, know that VisibleWomanOnline welcomes your work. We send out an open call to all writers and look forward to hearing from you. Please see below for our submission guidelines.

Until then, take the time to read or write a story.  It will take your breath away.
